If you’ve never been wine tasting close to home, the idea can feel a little intimidating — like you’re supposed to know the right words, swirl the glass a certain way, or spend a fortune. At the small family wineries near San Diego, none of that is true. Here’s what an afternoon actually looks like, so you can show up relaxed and just enjoy it.
It’s nothing like Napa (in a good way)
The wineries out in Jamul and along Highway 94 are small, family-run operations. There’s no valet, no crowds, and no pressure. In most cases the person pouring your wine is the one who grew the grapes or made the wine. You can ask anything — what the wine is, how it’s made, why it tastes the way it does — and get a real answer instead of a rehearsed script.
That’s the whole appeal of visiting wine country near San Diego: it’s unpretentious, personal, and built around actually talking to people.
Do you need a reservation?
At most of the trail wineries, no. Walk-ins are welcome during tasting room hours. At Hillside Ranch, we’re open Friday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. — just come on by. If you’re bringing a larger group (say, six or more), it’s polite to call ahead so we can make room, but for a couple or a small group you can simply show up.
How a tasting works
A tasting is a flight — a series of small pours, usually five or so, that walk you through the lineup. At Hillside Ranch a tasting is $20 for five pours, and we waive that fee with a two-bottle purchase. You’ll typically move from lighter whites to bigger reds.
You don’t have to finish every pour, and you don’t have to buy anything (though most people find something they like). Take your time. There’s no rush to move you along.
What you’ll taste at Hillside Ranch Vineyard
We pour wines made from grapes grown right here on the ranch — Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. We also work with grapes from neighboring growers to round out the list with Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Riesling. If you’re new to wine, tell whoever’s pouring; we’ll point you toward what you’ll probably enjoy and explain as much (or as little) as you want.
A few easy tips for first-timers
- Eat something first. The pours are small, but they add up. Bring a snack or plan for lunch. We also offer light snacks for purchase.
- Have a driver. If you’re visiting more than one winery, sort out who’s driving before you head out.
- Take your time. No need to hit five wineries in a day. Two or three at an easy pace is plenty.
- Ask questions. Seriously — it’s the best part, and nobody expects you to be an expert.
